Senator Robert Byrd - C-SPAN, April 20
The Border Patrol conducted successful tests using the UAVs to for surveillance and to assist in detecting individuals attempting to enter the U.S. illegally. The operation, known as the Arizona Border Control initiative used these drones to monitor and patrol a 350 mile-long swath of the desert border. More than 350,000 illegal immigrants crossing into the U.S. were apprehended during the operation. Regrettably, this program was shut down on January 31 of this year. The funds provided in this amendment would provide for the immediate resumption of these surveillance and detection operations. [Note: The Byrd amendment was passed]
