Survey Shows U. S. Short of Goal
Progress on Bombing Range Greater than Expect

September 25, 2007

As part of Operation B.E.E.F. the effort to track progress in the implementation of the Secure Fence Act of 2006, yesterday American Border Patrol performed an aerial survey of the border from Naco, Arizona, to San Diego, California.

ABP reports that fence construction along the border has been accelerated near Yuma, Arizona, and Calexico, California.  "DHS has made significant progress on the southern boundary of the Barry M. Goldwater Air Force Range east of Yuma, Arizona and some new fencing west of Calexico, California," said Glenn Spencer of ABP.  Spencer said progress on the fence near Naco and Sasabe, Arizona was measurable, but he doubted that this fencing would be completed before the end of the month as promised by DHS.

"Based on this survey, I doubt that DHS will come even close to completing 150 miles of new fencing before the end of September as promised by Secretary Chertoff," Spencer added.

ABP spotted a small group of suspected border intruders deep in the mountains west of Nogales (see photo) suggesting the need to extend security systems even into remote areas.

ABP will be returning to its home base today and will report details of the survey next week.
