The Secure
Fence Act of 2006 calls for at least 700 miles of 2-layer fence
to be built along the southern border. In the first year, DHS
has constructed, at most, 55 miles of single layered fence and
6 miles of 2 layer fence. At this rate it will take DHS 24 years
to finish the job.
"Most of the new fencing will not really stop foot traffic,
but it will do a much better job of stopping vehicles,"
said Glenn Spencer of American Border Patrol. ABP
is poring over the data it collected last week and will produce
a definitive statement on the actual number of miles of new fencing
by Oct. 5.
