Border Security Issue Looms Large
Will Senators show Dole's courage?
Stephen Dinan -- Washington Times -- February 14
Napolitano: No need to bind amnesty to border security
"The American People want to see results control of that border. We need to establish standards – metrics and show that they have been achieved." -- Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) 6/28/2007 - Watch
Homeland Security Secretary Janet A. Napolitano told lawmakers Wednesday that the southwest border is more secure than ever and warned against holding legalization hostage to more border security --- prompting a key Republican to warn the Obama administration that it is endangering chances for a bill this year.
Ms. Napolitano, testifying to the Senate Judiciary Committee, said the Border Patrol has been beefed up, hundreds of miles of fencing have been built, and her department is deporting a record number of illegal immigrants.
She said those efforts will ensure there is no repeat of 1986, when amnesty was supposed to be coupled with better immigration enforcement, but the government didn't follow through.
"Immigration enforcement now is light-years away from what it was in 1986," she said.
The state of border security is a giant factor in this year's debate, disputes over which helped scuttle an immigration bill in 2007
Red DotAmerican Patrol Report Comment
    * Minutes before the 2007 vote on amnesty, Sen. Elizabeth Dole stood on the floor of U.S. Senate and said: ..."And certainly there's one area in which we have much agreement, and that is securing our borders. Clearly the American People don't have any confidence at all in the promises that this will be done when there's a track record of total failure. 1986 three million illegal aliens and today of course twelve million or more... 2006 - The Secure Fence Act - 700 miles of fencing to be built, only two miles have been built. And so my strong view is that it's not just promises, it's proof that people want. The American People want to see results, control of our borders. So we need to establish standards, metrics and show that they have been achieved."
How did Sen. Dole know only two miles of fence had been built? American Border Patrol's Operation B.E.E.F.
Now ABP has tested a system that will do exactly what Sen. Dole said is needed.
What Senator will now show the courage of Sen. Dole and speak the truth?
