Obama Immigration Aide Seeks to Finish Journey
Cecilia Munoz, President Barack Obama's chief domestic policy adviser, keeps a framed letter from the late Democratic senator and immigration advocate Ted Kennedy in her West Wing office.
"We didn't complete the journey, but we'll get there," Kennedy wrote in 2007 following the collapse of bipartisan efforts to overhaul the nation's fractured immigration system.
New York Times -- October 22, 2000
...Cecilia Munoz, a vice president for policy at the National Council of La Raza, a Hispanic civil rights organization, described the national anti-immigration groups as "hate groups." She noted that Glenn Spencer, the leader of Voices of Citizens Together [now known as American Patrol] who spoke at Sachem's rally last weekend, believes that Mexicans on both sides of the border are plotting to reconquer parts of the Southwest. "He makes contentions that are ugly and very divisive," she said. "Not the kinds of things that bring people together, as is clearly needed in Farmingville right now."
Glenn Spencer -- February 18
Munoz said I was making contentions that are ugly and very divisive. What I did was repeat statements by Mexicans on both sides of the border that were very ugly and divisive.
What follows are just a few examples. (For more click here.)
Mexican President Zedillo -- National Council of La Raza in Chicago
"I have proudly affirmed that the Mexican nation extends beyond the territory enclosed by its borders and that Mexican migrants are an important - a very important - part of it."
Angel Pescador Osuna, Mexican Consul General of Los Angeles
"Even though I am saying this part serious and part joking, I think we are practicing la Reconquista in California."
Mario Obledo Co-founder of MALDEF
"California is going to be a Hispanic state and anyone who doesn’t like it should leave."
