Governor Davis Vetoes Driver's License Bill for Illegal Aliens

October 1, 2002

At the midnight deadline last night, California Governor Gray Davis vetoed a measure that would have allowed illegal aliens to obtain driver's licenses. The bill, AB 60, which was attached to SB 804, would have compromised national security and encouraged illegal immigration, by allowing over 1 million illegal aliens living in California to obtain driver,s licenses and other state-issued ID.

Governor Davis said after vetoing the bill, "The tragedy of September 11 made it abundantly clear that the driver's license is more than just a license to drive; it is one of the primary documents we use to identify ourselves." We anticipate that Governor Davis's action will set a precedent in other states considering similar action.

FAIR has been fighting this legislation for two years and we would like to thank all of our dedicated activists who fought this battle. Please see FAIR's Press Release for more information.
