Schueler named new Daily News Publisher

Wednesday, June 20, 2001WOODLAND HILLS -- Gerald Grilly, executive vice president and chief operating officer of MediaNews Group, on Tuesday named John Schueler, 51, publisher of the Daily News of Los Angeles.
The appointment is effective July 9.Schueler most recently was publisher and president of the Star Tribune in Minneapolis.
From 1993 until 1998, he served as president and chief operating officer of the Orange County Register. Earlier, Shallower had executive positions with Knight Ridder newspapers in Detroit and Miami and with Cox newspapers in Atlanta.
"We are very fortunate to find someone of John's caliber to join MediNews," said Grilly. "His varied experience in major metro markets and his familiarity with the Greater Los Angeles market is a real plus."
Schueler said Tuesday that he is delighted to be returning to California.
"I'm excited about joining MediaNews and the Los Angeles Newspaper Group in what is one of the most exciting media markets in the country. I also very much look forward to getting better acquainted with the Daily News team, the Valley and the surrounding region."
Schueler and his wife, Linda, have two daughters, Tracie, 22, and Lindsey, 18, who attend college in California.
He replaces Ike Massey, who said he was leaving the newspaper as of June 30 to spend more time with his family.
The Daily News is one of the eight daily newspapers in Southern California that are part of the Los Angeles Newspaper Group, with is owned by MediaNews Group of Denver.
