If we don't win these votes or at least get close, the leadership may conclude that we don't have enough strength to justify bringing up our issues later this year.
Debate has begun this morning on HR 1950. Rules chair Rep. Dreier already has made a pitch for his amendment to re-open talks with Mexico about legalizing that country's illegal flow into the U.S.
It now is looking like there will be 37 amendments. The two immigration amendments will likely be part of a large block of votes later this afternoon.

SHORT DESCRIPTION OF AMENDMENTS:
If you want -- or if you are asked -- you can quickly describe the amendments in this way:The Hostettler/Gallegly amendment would put some major restrictions on ID cards that are being issued to illegal aliens by foreign governments. These cards make it easier for illegal aliens to gain government services and to otherwise profit from their illegal activity. VOTE YES on this amendment to restrict the cards.
The Dreier amendment would urge Pres. Bush to resume talks with Mexico about the U.S. giving an amnesty to illegal aliens from Mexico. VOTE NO.
