Re: Do the Math, Latinos are Gaining Power
Earl Ofari Hutchison. L.A. Times, March 15, 2001
On May 15, 1992, Edward Litwak of the Center for Strategic Studies, wrote in the New York Times, "From Jesse Jackson on down, wider political ambitions induce black leaders to betray the uppermost interest of their poorest followers in order to coalesce with Hispanic groups that oppose all serious efforts to contain immigration." Evidence, underlined by Jackson leading the Justice for Janitors March through Los Angeles last year, shows that Litwak was right. The question is, what political calculus would cause black leaders to sacrifice the political power of their followers?
