Violent Crime Up 10% in L. A.

By Walter Moore -- January 25, 2009

Villaraigosa and Bratton are quick to hold self-congratulatory press conferences whenever crime rates dip. Yet they say absolutely nothing when crime rates go up. If they claim credit for good news, shouldn't they accept responsibility for bad news?

I mention this because the LAPD's latest crime statistics -- released with no fanfare -- show that violent crime is up 10% so far this year.

Over the course of just 17 days, guess how many of our fellow Angelinos were victims of violent crimes? The correct answer is 1,237. That's over 72 violent crimes per day!

If you want a Mayor who will make hiring enough police the Number One budget priority, I'm your man. We need to make every neighborhood a safe neighborhood.

Bratton himself says our police force needs a total of at least 12,000 officers. Villaraigosa's stated goal is a mere 10,300. Talk about planning for failure!

And while Villaraigosa has increased his own staff by 32% in a single year -- from 70 to 93 deputy mayors and mayoral aides -- he has increased the police force by a mere 6% during the three-and-a-half years he's been in office, to an inadequate force of just 9,800 officers.

Make me Mayor, and make criminal prosecutor David Berger our City Attorney, and we will make this city a sanctuary for families, not gangs. We'll take the handcuffs off the police by repealing Special Order 40 so police can put handcuffs on the gang bangers who don't even belong in this country.

And I will never tolerate or accept as "normal" the cold-blooded lynching-by-bullet of our neighbors, people like Jamiel Shaw, II and James Shamp, good people who were just minding their own business when they were murdered for being black. It's criminals who should be scared, not law-abiding citizens.

To fix this city, however, you and I have to spread the word of my candidacy ourselves. So please don't delay any longer: get a free yard sign and bumper sticker, and download some flyers for your neighbors' doorsteps today. We can do this -- we probably will need only about 75,000 votes -- but we can do it only if YOU take action. Click here to help.
