Why Does Villaraigosa Give Gangs Sanctuary?

Did you realize Mayor Villaraigosa could deny "sanctuary city" protection to gang members with the stroke of a pen?
The City Charter makes Villaraigosa the chief executive over all departments, and lets him "implement policies not inconsistent with the Charter or ordinance . . . ."
Villaraigosa could and should therefore simply issue an executive directive requiring the Police Chief to implement the policies set forth in Jamiel's Law. Neither the Charter nor any ordinance requires Villaraigosa to grant "sanctuary city" protection to any illegal aliens, much less illegal aliens in gangs.
Why, then, won't Villaraigosa simply adopt the policies set forth in Jamiel's Law on his own?
Why does Villaraigosa instead insist on giving "sanctuary city" protection not just to illegal aliens who come here to work, but also to illegal aliens who come here to join criminal gangs?
Why won't Villaraigosa deport illegal alien gang members before they kill another Jamiel Shaw, II, rather than waiting until afterwards? After all, he could do so while continuing to extend "sanctuary city" protection to illegal aliens who come to our country to work. How many more innocent children must die?
As we continue to take our case to City Council, we need to remember why we it's necessary: it's necessary because Mayor Villaraigosa refuses to do the right thing.
We will give the City Council Members a little more time to do the right thing. Right now, it looks as though they think they can dupe the public into accepting Zine's counterfeit, watered-down motion -- a motion that would not require any change whatsoever in existing policy. If the City Council, like Villaraigosa, continues to give sanctuary to gang members, we will launch an initiative petition so that we, the people, can enact Jamiel's Law ourselves.
In the meantime, however, as you pressure public officials to adopt Jamiel's Law, remember why all this effort is necessary: Villaraigosa is giving gangs sanctuary, even though he could stop doing so in a heartbeat.
