Group
looks to corral day laborers
Neighborhood activists want to move the
city's day laborer pickup site indoors to ease tensions between
the Hispanic men walking on the East Side looking for work and
store owners who say they scare customers away. -- An estimated
150 to 200 men, many recent immigrants from South America, congregate
seven days a week under Interstate 95 in a city-designated labor
pickup spot. |

Let's
be partners, not patsies with Mexico
...The Mexican government has
sent in the "first string" to bolster its faltering
efforts to have state and local governments make life easier
for illegal immigrants living in the United States. The problem
is, such lobbying efforts by President Fox only spotlight the
failures of his own economy. -- Fox's time would be better spent
in Mexico working to fix his country's failed socialist economy.

Murders
go unsolved as smuggling grows
...Police officials blame an increase
in immigrant and narcotics smuggling and the state's lax gun
laws for much of this year's rise in homicides and the corresponding
drop in the clearance rate. -- The influx of immigrants also
makes it difficult to find witnesses who know anything and are
willing to tell. |
