enforce. Legal immigrants, who followed all the rules, waited
patiently, and sometimes left their homelands at great risk to

An increasing number of migrant workers
and other illegal immigrants from Mexico who used to go home
for the holidays are spending Christmas in the United States,
largely because of tighter security along the border. -- Many
of them could cross into Mexico easily enough if they wanted
to. But they are afraid they would not be able to get back into

...Bush said last week he opposed a "blanket
amnesty" allowing all 8 million illegal immigrants to instantly
become legal permanent residents. Instead of an amnesty, some
administration officials have talked of a "legalization"
program that would allow some of those in the country illegally
to work toward legal residency through the sponsorship of an

A Mexican man who was once deported from
the United States for felony convictions was arrested near his
Ferndale home Wednesday on suspicion of continuous sexual abuse
of a child. -- The Humboldt County Sheriff's Department said
deputies responded to a Newburg Road home in Fortuna around 5
p.m. Tuesday to take a report of sexual abuse against a child....

camps to be razed near Rancho Penasquitos
Though many migrant workers did not know
it this week, city workers are preparing to evict them and raze
their makeshift camps at McGonigle Canyon near Rancho Penasquitos.
-- San Diego police Officer Boris Martinez, the department's
migrant liaison officer, said Tuesday that there have been complaints
from neighbors about people living in the canyon.  |
