Ignorance in Action
House border committee hears from the clueless
Dallas Morning News -- April 17
Texas National Guard general says proposed cuts will "cripple" anti-drug trafficking efforts on the border
~~~ /// ~~~
    Washington -- The adjutant general of the Texas National Guard said proposed cuts to border security personnel in the White House budget plan would be "devastating" to efforts to curb drug trafficking into Texas.
    "This reduction will essentially cripple the guard's ability to support its congressionally mandated mission in support of the national drug control strategy," Maj. Gen. John F. Nichols said at a hearing examining the administration's shift away from "boots on the ground" to "eyes in the sky" in its strategy for controlling the U.S.-Mexico border.
    President Barack Obama's proposal would decrease personnel assigned to the Texas Joint Counterdrug Task Force from 215 to 115, Nichols told members of the House Homeland Security Committee.
    Obama's plan would also increase aerial surveillance on the border. The shift, part of the administration's vision of a leaner, more efficient military, came after a steep drop-off in border arrests in recent years.
    Glenn Spencer, American Border Patrol: In reviewing the testimony given before Rep. Miller's committee, I have concluded that these people don't have a clue as to what is really going on at the U.S. Mexico border. This is especially true of Brian J. Lepore, Director Defense Capabilities and Management, U.S. Government Accountability Office. More tomorrow.
Update: Glenn Spencer of America Border Patrol reports that he just flew 120 miles of the Arizona border from the New Mexico line to west of Nogales and could find no evidence of the National Guard or regular Army Stryker units on or near the border where they are usually found.
