Threats leveled at Muslim groups in Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES (CNN E-Mail Alert - 8:00 PM) -- Several Arab and Muslim groups in California received threatening phone calls Tuesday in response to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Maha Elgenaidi, executive director of the Islamic Networks Group in San Jose, said "a lot of Islamic Centers have shut Web sites down because of the amount of hate mail they were getting." Her organization received two "hate" calls after the attacks. Elgenaidi said the first caller told her to "get the hell out of this country. You people have done nothing but ruin this country. You don't belong here. Your religion is vile and evil."

Mexico nervous as U.S. weighs closing southern border after terror attacks
Tightened security caused huge traffic jams at the American border with Mexico on Tuesday, as U.S. agents braced for a possible border closure after terrorist attacks in the United States. -- All the main border crossings were open hours after the attacks, but customs and other agents were rushed to the line, where U.S. authorities went on alert along the 2,100- mile frontier.

CNN: The identities of some of the victims of the worst terrorist attack on American soil began to emerge Tuesday evening, including the top executives of a California optical networks company, a Boston-based technology company, a top NBC executive producer and the wife of the United States' solicitor general. As the day drew to a close, it was still horribly unclear exactly how many people had died, but the number was clearly in the thousands.

Authorities went on alert from coast to coast today, halting all air traffic, evacuating high-profile buildings and tightening security at strategic facilities following the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Evacuations were ordered at the United Nations building in New York, the Sears Tower in Chicago and the tallest skyscrapers in Boston, Cleveland and Minneapolis. Seattle's landmark Space Needle was closed. -- In Massachusetts and Maine, most state employees were sent home, and state buildings shut down.
